Compositional Concepts. From photographs we took what we learned and applied it to the piece to create something moOore than the original photo. Haha, I donno, but it was fun and definitely left some impressions to rub over on future projects and ideas. (Do you like my weird similes?)
“I feel bad about the moths getting in here”
Our midterm for painting is to do an illustration for a New Yorker article. I found one called “Over the Wall”. The author, Roger Angell, recently lost his wife and considers how all the things the dead don’t know pile up (such as President Obamas reelection, Hurricane Sandy, their granddaughters first weeks at preschool, …), and takes you farther away from who you were when they knew you last, and therefore, farther away from them. It’s a really lovely piece, the kind that makes you cry even though the writing is executed more objectively rather than emotionally, kind of detached. He writes in a kind of rambling sort of way. The way you think when the thoughts are too sad to bear, so you kind of just let them go off on their own. Then he’ll get pulled back to the present, and it’s at one of these moments where he regrets at the moths getting in and messing with his memory of her. The entire article is beautiful, but that simple moment created such poignant imagery and embodied the feeling of the article so well that I decided I wanted to use that passage as the base for my painting.
So this was what I worked on today. It is ink splashes scanned into Photoshop and then drawn on top of and messed around with. This isn’t the final painting, not even close. Its just one step to figuring out how the final piece will go. But i got so sucked into it, before I knew it the sun was setting. Im starting to like digital a little more. Especially when its mostly just simple inking. Anyways, Im rather fond of this little picture, so, I thought I’d put it up here.
“Last Week Of Winter Break Frantic Upload!” - Day 2:
Self Portraits, Self Portraits, Self Portraits galore. I’ve never felt so conceited as I did this last semester…
Exquisite Corpse
Pen and ink & Prismacolor Verithin Pencils (for the final ‘corpse’)
For our last fun project of the semester in my Figure Composition class we did Exquisite Corpses. It was tons of fun! (If you dont know what an exquisite corpse is, look it up! its fun!) So then we went home and reworked our exquisite corpse outcome. It was a really fun project and I hope to do this again in the future!
As a plus, this made me re-love dip pens! I had been leaning towards a brush for inking, but i think I’m reconsidering the crow quill.
We’re starting to work on our comic full time in Cartooning! Im so excited and nervous :) i hope it turns out to be something i love. I’ll keep you posted!
In the mean time, these are gag strips. it was an exercise from the beginning of the semester of cartooning. Not very good at writing gag strips. The illustrations turned out okay, though they were done in a daze in one night. Shoulda varied the line width. Oh well. Anyways, just something to show since i felt like i’d been awol for a month.
Sorry for the lack of posts recently, between family, school and video games I’ve been a little busy :)
This was a quick project for my Cartooning class. Just had to make an ad for any product using a character. So ya, I like monsters, and so night-lights just made sense. Plus, I had to finish up quick so i could get to my cousins birthday :P
Its just ink on bristol. I actually really like it. I taped it to my closet door. I find it ironic yet comforting :P
I’ve really started to enjoy watercolors as i continue to work with them. (I no longer curse their name in vane) So, needing to make a new cover to replace the currently deteriorating one on my sketchbook, I thought I’d experiment with watercolor in a more free flowing fashion than i normally do. The result is this! Totally DrawGabbyDraw inspired and i love it. Completely enamored with watercolor + ink.
P.S. Jumped on an EatSleepDraw sketchbook this morning. Never bought one before. Totally Excited.
Oh Candle, How do I light thee?
Let me count the ways…
