Portrait in Watercolor

I’m taking watercolor this semester. It’s made me pretty happy. I donno what it is, but, watercolor is my jam, haha. I’m not great at it, but when I get started I just get in that zone and relax and paint. It’s great. Anyways, this was an in-class painting we did, just with black watercolor, but once again, I had a great amount of fun :)

Carter! The Little Adventurer

I’ve been waiting for term to start to scan a couple paintings I did at the end of spring semester. So in the meantime, this is a little something a made for Digital Design. A vector character. I made little travel journals featuring this little guy. Easy to fit in your pocket you’ll always have it handy to record your adventures, wherever your travels take you!

Feeling really bored and/or antsty this week? Grab your scissors and tape, print out out this paper doll and get rid of that extra energy! Plus, when you’re done, you’ll have a nice little spirit to hang in your window who’ll watch out for you at night.

*if you do want to make her and her moon, print the moon out on larger paper if you can. Or on multiple sheets. Otherwise it’s a little too small for her to sit on.

I did a couple more French Garden Animals. They’re so fun for me! I would love to make them into a book so I’ve made a cover and an inside cover. Each page has a back as well that shows the seed of the fruit with an aspect of that particular animal. For instance on the back of Bouffle Myrtille is a blueberry seed with horns, and under the seed is the translation of the French. Speaking of which: (from left to right) Blueberry Buffalo, Watermelon Octopus, Corn Owl.

And now you know :) What Garden Animals would you like to see? Would they make an interesting book?

Le Jardin Zoologique

The past few weeks I found myself putting off homework in favor of learning French. So, in the hopes of actually getting some work done I decided to incorporate French into my drawing . It worked. And it was awesome. I combined various fruits/vegetables with animals and illustrated the resulting creature. So come learn French with me!

Patterns inspired by memories of the butterfly room at the natural history museum in New York. I know nothing about fashion, and even less about patterns or textiles. But this turned out to be pretty fun. Now would anyone ever use them? That is another question entirely.

“I feel bad about the moths getting in here”

Our midterm for painting is to do an illustration for a New Yorker article. I found one called “Over the Wall”. The author, Roger Angell, recently lost his wife and considers how all the things the dead don’t know pile up (such as President Obamas reelection, Hurricane Sandy, their granddaughters first weeks at preschool, …), and takes you farther away from who you were when they knew you last, and therefore, farther away from them. It’s a really lovely piece, the kind that makes you cry even though the writing is executed more objectively rather than emotionally, kind of detached. He writes in a kind of rambling sort of way. The way you think when the thoughts are too sad to bear, so you kind of just let them go off on their own. Then he’ll get pulled back to the present, and it’s at one of these moments where he regrets at the moths getting in and messing with his memory of her. The entire article is beautiful, but that simple moment created such poignant imagery and embodied the feeling of the article so well that I decided I wanted to use that passage as the base for my painting.

So this was what I worked on today. It is ink splashes scanned into Photoshop and then drawn on top of and messed around with. This isn’t the final painting, not even close. Its just one step to figuring out how the final piece will go. But i got so sucked into it, before I knew it the sun was setting. Im starting to like digital a little more. Especially when its mostly just simple inking. Anyways, Im rather fond of this little picture, so, I thought I’d put it up here.

Graphic Tee Illustration

So I was at a loss for what to do with this graphic tee assignment. I mean, its an awesome assignment, but you could literally do anything! And I didnt know what to do. Eventually, I thought about one of the stories in my head, about how when one shooting star crashed to earth it shattered into a million little pieces and thats how fireflies were created. So, I thought I’d do a t-shirt on that idea.

Its [once again] super cutesy… It drives me insane. When left to my own devices that’s how everything I do turns out. Ah well. The fireflies are super cute <3

So this is it, the final update from last semester’s work.

This was my final for Head & Hands. I guess I should explain. I chose 32 artists, for each artist I did a master copy of their work (on the left [except for 2]) and then did a self portrait in their style (on the right, -2). It was the most fun I’d had on any project all semester. (And it took half a semester so I’m glad it was enjoyable) eh, for fun I’ll list the artists:

“Last Week Of Winter Break Frantic Upload!” - Day 3:

An album cover for the band She & Him. I just wanted to do a fun, cutesy piece after all my other serious, tedious projects. And who embodies ‘cutesy’ better than Zooey Deschanel?

The text is all hand done in ink, not touched up in Photoshop or anything. Just scanned in. I was pretty happy with how the whole thing turned out :)
